Ophthalmologist Urges Caution Around Fireworks |  | Tamim Qaum, MD | |
Wichita Clinic Ophthalmologist Dr. Tamim Qaum reminds those celebrating the Fourth of July to exercise caution around fireworks. Dr. Qaum is a graduate of Harvard Medical School and has been in practice at Wichita Clinic since 2006. He completed his residency at the Duke University Eye Center and focuses on treating cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, and macular degeneration and will be covering emergency ophthalmology call for Wichita this Fourth of July.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology (www.aao.org) has issued these helpful facts and tips:
Firework facts:
- There are almost 2000 fireworks-related eye injuries annually in the United States.
- Of these, about 25% result in blindness or permanent vision loss.
About eye injuries:
- 75% of eye injuries happen to teenage boys.
- 75% of injuries to children under age 5 are from sparklers, which burn at 1800 degrees Fahrenheit—hot enough to melt gold.
- 25% of eye injuries happen to bystanders.
To prevent an eye injury:
- Always view firework displays from at least 500 feet away.
- Always follow directions and respect safety barriers.
- Always let trained professionals light the fireworks.
- Never let children play with fireworks, especially sparklers.
- Never touch unexploded fireworks.
If you do sustain an eye injury:
- Always see your eye doctor immediately or go to the nearest emergency room.
- Do not rinse or rub the eye. Cover it with a shield.
- Do not apply ointment to the eye.
- Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen and other blood thinners, unless medically necessary.
