Open Bore MRI

Q. What is it?
A. MAGNETOM Espree 1.5 Tesla High Open Field MRI made by Siemens Medical Solutions.

Q. Is it available at Wichita Clinic?
A. It was installed on March 6, 2006 at Wichita Clinic Founders’ Circle (1947 Founders’ Circle).

Q. Why is it different?
A. FOR DOCTORS - It is the only 1.5 Tesla magnet open MRI in Wichita.  (The next closest location is in Lawrence, KS.)  It has five times the strength of a normal open MRI, which means physicians have a much better diagnostic tool at their disposal.

FOR PATIENTS – Claustrophobic patients and those who are overweight find this to be a much more comfortable experience.  There are other open MRIs available in the Wichita area for these patients, but they are .3 Tesla.  The 1.5 Tesla offers improved diagnostic confidence.

Q. Why is the Clinic investing in this technology?
A. To offer the very best imaging experience for our patients and to ensure that their physicians have access to the most powerful open MRI diagnostic tool available.  We are meeting the needs of both physicians and patients who are demanding higher quality imaging.

Q. Will physicians outside of Wichita Clinic be able to send their patients to Wichita Clinic for MRIs?
A. Yes.  The Radiology Dept is guaranteeing physicians outside of Wichita Clinic that they will have MRI results faxed back to them within 2-3 days.

Q. Can you see the difference in the image with the naked eye?
A. Yes.  In particular, it offers improved imaging of protruding disks and ligament problems on larger patients.

Q. How will the cost differ for the patient?
A. There is no difference in the cost and insurance companies will not change their reimbursement.  What insurance companies, patients, and physicians will notice is a higher likelihood of getting a high-quality image the first time through.
