Poison Proof Your Home

Many accidental poisonings involving children occur in the home. A common occurrence involves small children who become hungry in the late afternoon as caregivers are busy preparing the evening meal. Children that have learned to walk may go looking in areas they can reach for something to put in their mouth. The Home Safety Council suggests these things you can do to poison proof you home:

  • Keep foods and household cleaning products in separate places.
  • Cleaning products and chemicals should be in locked cabinets when not in use.
  • Keep household products in their original containers. Never put kerosene, antifreeze, paints, or solvents in containers that are normally used for food or drinks.
  • Avoid taking medicine in the presence of a child, since children tend to imitate adults. Do not leave unused medicine in nightstands, purses, or other places that are easily accessible to children.
  • Always turn on the light and read medicine labels before preparing a dose for a child.
  • Refrain from calling medicines “candy” in order to get children to take them.
  • Keep medicines out of the reach of children. Dispose of outdated and unneeded medicines.
