  • List of your child's medications, dosage & frequency
  • Drug allergies & reaction

If a work release is needed or family leave and insurance papers need to be completed, please provide these to your doctor's office prior to the surgery date.

What To Expect

Prior to surgery, an anesthesiologist will discuss with you your child's medical history and what to expect from the anesthetic. They will decide how best to proceed with separation from parents. In most cases with young children, a mask anesthetic is performed with the IV started after the child is asleep. In some cases, an IV may need to be started prior to going to the operating room.

Parents will not be allowed into the operating room with their child. With many years of experience, the anesthesiologists have found that children do very well upon separation from parents. They will be asleep within a few minutes of leaving the pre-op area.

After surgery, the parents will be reunited with their child as soon as possible. It is in the best interest of the child to begin the recovery process prior to parents returning to the bedside. We will call parents to the recovery room as the child is waking up.

Recovery time varies greatly among children and is also dependent upon the type of surgery performed.

Going Home

Upon your dismissal, your nurse will speak with you and your child about:

  • What to expect and things to watch for
  • Activity and diet after surgery
  • When to call the doctor for follow-up care
  • Medications that he/she may be taking

Some degree of pain is expected following surgery and pain medications will be provided. Please remember that pain medicine is not an anesthetic. It makes the pain tolerable so that your child can rest, but will not usually make your child pain free.

As an outpatient facility, only fluids will be provided for your child after surgery. Food is unavailable unless your child experiences an extended stay. A n adult must stay with your child the first 24 hours after leaving the Surgery Center.

If you have any questions after leaving the Wichita Clinic Surgery Center, contact your physician's office. If you have questions after regular business hours please call the physician exchange at (316) 262-6262 to be connected with your physician or the physician on-call.

If you have any questions, please call: (316) 613-4931.

If an issue remains unresolved during or after your visit to the Wichita Clinic Surgery Center, you may call the Kansas Department of Health and Environment at: 1-800-842-0078
